Biography

Alexander C. Loui obtained his B.A.Sc. (Honors), M.A.Sc, and Ph.D. all in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto, Canada. After completing his Ph.D. in 1990, he joined Bellcore (now Telcordia Technologies) in New Jersey as a Member of Technical Staff working on audiovisual compression technologies including MPEG and H.261, multipoint video conferencing systems, and the transport of multimedia over IP-based networks. At Bellcore, he has contributed to the development of a multimedia testbed (including set-top box design) over ATM/ADSL/LAN providing MPEG video-on-demand services.  He joined the Network Imaging Technology Center at Eastman Kodak Company  in 1996. Since 1998, he has been a group leader of Multimedia Communications in the Kodak Imaging Research Laboratories. He has been an adjunct professor at the ECE Department, University of Toronto since 1999.  Dr. Loui has been a member of ISO/IEC MPEG , ITU-T Study Group 15, Experts Group for Audiovisual Coding and Systems, and NCITS/L3.1 (National Committee for Information Technology Standards).  His current research interests include algorithm development and system research for multimedia content analysis, organization, authoring, and delivery. He has published over 40 refereed papers and authored over 15 US patents (either granted or pending) in image/video processing, auto-albuming, and multimedia authoring technology.

Dr. Loui is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, and the SPIE/IS&T Journal of Electronic Imaging. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Technical Committee on Multimedia Systems and Applications, and a member of SPIE. He has served as a member of program committee, session chair, and tutorial speaker in many image processing and multimedia conferences since 1990.  Recently, he has been an Area Chair (2001) and Program Committee member (2000, 2001) of the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia & Expo. He has been a member of the Program Committee of the IEEE Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (2000, 2001), and the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (2000). He was the special session chair on "Semantic feature extraction in consumer contents," at the 2000 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, and served in the Program Committee of the same conference from 1994-96.  He was an invited tutorial speaker at the 1999 International Symposium on Multimedia Information Processing in Taipei, Taiwan. Dr. Loui received an award for leadership and innovation in research and development of digital stroytelling and auto-albuming technology from Kodak in 1998.  He was a recipient of the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada Postgraduate Scholarships, the Wallbery Undergraduate Scholarship, and the J. Edgar McAllister Foundation Award during his studies at the University of Toronto.
